Dean Thompson
1936 - 2024
MARION – Dean Thompson, age 87, of Marion, Indiana, passed on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Marion General Hospital. He was born on October 25, 1936, in Connersville, Indiana to the late James and Nelie Thompson. In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his sons, Jeffrey and Kevin Thompson, and many siblings.
Dean is survived by his wife of 68 years, Della Marlene (Crank) Thompson, whom he married on December 24, 1955; his daughter, Susan (Martyn) Barnes of San Clemente, California; his grandchildren, Daniel Collins of Marion, Jesse Thompson of Marion, and Sebastian Thompson- Cecato of Florida; his great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Dean was born and raised in Connersville Indiana. After high school, Dean served his country honorably for three years in the US Army. Following his military service, he moved to Marion and was employed at General Motors, retiring after decades of service. In his younger days, Dean loved boating, skiing, fishing, hunting and camping. He enjoyed the hobby of cake decorating, dancing with Marlene, gardening and listening to live music, especially Blues. They loved to travel together. Over their many years they took many cruises, traveled to Florida, California, Hawaii and were fortunate enough to make the memorable trip to the Galapagos Islands.
Special thanks to Daniel Collins and Marci Burke, for their care and commitment tending to Dean’s healthcare. We are forever grateful for your loving care. We take solace knowing that Dean is at peace, pain free and happy to be with his two sons, many relatives and dear friends.
Visitation will be from 11AM to 1PM on Friday January 26, 2024, at Grace Community Church located at 1810 E. Bradford Pike, Marion, Indiana 46952. Funeral services will follow at 1PM with Pastor Tom Manager officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Marion.
Flowers and gifts may be delivered to the church on Friday, January 26 between 9AM and 11AM. If desired, memorial contributions may be made, in Dean’s honor, to either the Marion Grant County Humane Society, 505 S. Miller Ave., Marion, Indiana 46953 or to Grace Community Church. Donation envelopes will be available at the service.
