Susan Lee Adams

1960 - 2022

AUBURN, IN - Susan Lee (Carter) Adams, 62, of Auburn, Indiana, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on October 19, 2022. Sue was born April 13, 1960, in LaPorte, Indiana, the third daughter of William and Wilda “Beth” Carter of Walkerton.

She is survived by two sisters, Laura (Philip) Chase of Auburn, Indiana, and Lynn (Randy) Millikan of Bourbonnais, Illinois; two daughters, Emily (Bryant) Lehman of Mishawaka, Indiana, and Rachel (Jeffrey) Ragauskis of Tinley Park, Illinois, and five grandchildren, Nora, Hazel, and Margaret Lehman, and Kyle and Erin Ragauskis. She was preceded in death by her father, William; her mother, Beth; a sister, Sara, and a grandson, Teddy Lehman.

Sue was an athlete at John Glenn High School and participated in volleyball and track. Her Glenn school record in the 880-yard run still stands. Sue was a musician, especially singing in high school choir, swing choir, and in the nursing school choir. She received her RN from West Suburban Hospital School of Nursing in 1981. She married her high school sweetheart in 1981 before completing her bachelor’s degree at Valparaiso University in 1987. Sue was totally devoted to her two daughters. She also worked as a nurse in cardiac care and in family practice.

Sue was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when she was in her twenties. From her seat in a wheelchair, she directed church adult and children’s choirs, and she took great pride in planning details of celebrations and women’s conferences. She also taught women’s Bible studies for 25 years. She mentored and tirelessly fought for the rights of handicapped persons, especially in their access to buildings.

A funeral service will be held at 10 AM (CST) on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel in Merrillville, Indiana with Pastor A. J. Swanson officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery. The service will be preceded by a one-hour visitation. Memorial gifts can be sent to Susan Millikan Derek, who is Sue’s namesake.
