MUNCIE, INDIANA – Jacob “Jake” Charles Blankenbaker, age 38, of Muncie, died on Sunday, October 11, 2026. He was born on October 25, 1987, in Muncie, Indiana, to Douglas Blankenbaker and Peg Stevens.
If Jake could have written his own obituary, he would have cracked a joke, told everyone to quit being so serious, and reminded them that life is meant to be lived. If you knew Jake with his unique sense of humor, then you probably have a story to tell that would make everyone laugh.
He loved fishing, kayaking, golfing, playing cards, and never missed a Michigan Football or Basketball game.
On September 6, 2010, Jake had a diving accident that left him paralyzed, but he never let it take away his spirit, his sense of humor, or his desire to live. He faced difficult days with a determination that left a lasting impression on everyone around him. Above all, Jake was a friend to everybody. Whether you knew him for a lifetime or had only just met him, Jake had a way of making you feel like you belonged.
Jake is lovingly remembered by his grandmother, Janice Blankenbaker; mother, Peg (Blankenbaker) Stevens; father, Doug (Lisa) Blankenbaker; brother, Alex Blankenbaker; sister, Jessica Blankenbaker; stepsister, Shelbi Freemont; nephew, Riley Freemont; niece, Charlotte Hammers; brother from another mother, Joseph Smithers, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends across the country. We also want to thank Lifestyles home care, nurses, and aides for all their care over the years.
Jake would not want the people he loved to spend all their time being sad. So, share a story, tell a joke, cast a line, deal another hand of cards, cheer for Michigan, and remember him with a smile. Jake's family will be hosting a memorial gathering on Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at the Muncie Elks Golf Club, 909 North County Road 500 West, Muncie, Indiana 47304.
