Larry Smith
1954 - 2024
UNION, OH - Larry Smith, 70, of Union, Ohio, went home to be with Jesus on October 18, 2024. He was born on January 26, 1954, in Piqua, Ohio, to the late Robert and Hazel (Epperson) Smith.
Larry attended Piqua High School and worked as a machinist by trade, working his way up to shop supervisor, a position he held until he retired from National Oilwell Varco in 2019. To many of his coworkers, he was more than a supervisor – he was a mentor and a friend.
Larry married the love of his life, Debbie Spurlock, in December 2012. They enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, watching the Cincinnati Reds and University of Kentucky basketball, and enjoyed spending time with family. His granddaughter Taylor held a special place in Larry’s heart, with little Hannah coming along more recently.
Larry was a faithful man of God and enjoyed sharing his faith. He was ordained in the Church of God in 1983 and served as a pastor for two years and then as an evangelist at the Troy Church of God for several more. He was a member of Greenview Calvary Tabernacle, where he attended with his wife for many years.
Larry is survived by his wife of 12 years, Debbie Smith; children, Amy (Carol) Smith and Mike Smith of Piqua; step-children, Brian Smith, Candi Smith, and Darrell Spurlock Jr., all of Plain City, OH; siblings, Robert Smith Jr. of Covington, OH, Sheila (Joel) Nunez of Williamsburg, Indiana, Johnny (Angie) Smith of Piqua, OH, Danny (Peggy) Smith of Troy, OH, Samantha (John) Hanselman of Piqua, OH; grandchildren, Taylor and Hannah, as well as many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Joyce Smith of Piqua, OH and brother-in-law, John Reedy of West Milton, OH. A special thanks to John Reedy who was a great help in caring for Larry these last few months.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Smith of Piqua, OH and his sister, Carolyn Reedy of West Milton, OH.
Visitation will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at Greenview Calvary Tabernacle, 8010 N Main St, Dayton, Ohio, 45415. A funeral service will follow at the church at 12:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Tim Livingston. Burial will be at Miami Memorial Park, Covington, OH. Flowers may be delivered to the church on Tuesday between 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the church.
