VANDALIA, OH – James Douglas Hume, age 78, of Vandalia, OH, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 29, 2025. He was born on October 13, 1946, in Canton, OH, the son of the late Robert D. and Betty (Cain) Hume. He was preceded in death by his sweetheart of 36 years, Deborah (Campbell) Hume. He is survived by his daughters, Allison (Nick) Walton of Los Angeles, CA and Ashley (Brandon) Whitworth of Lexington, KY; granddaughters, Avonlea and Aria Walton and Merritt Whitworth; sister, Linda (Hume) Bell of Kettering, OH, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in the Hume, Cook, and Campbell families.

Jim graduated from Cedarville College in 1968 and received his draft notice shortly afterwards. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968-1971 in motor transport, serving as an officer in Okinawa, Japan. His participation in the 140th Honor Flight in 2024 was a personal highlight of his veteran status. Jim retired after over 35 years as a shipping clerk from General Motors/Delphi and spent ten years working at the Dayton International Airport in the shops where he enjoyed seeing many friends and family going to and from their travels. He lovingly cared for his wife through many years of cancer treatments.

Jim was a long-time member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and Washington Heights Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School, volunteered in the AWANA program, and served the families and leaders of those churches with many construction projects over the years. Jim was an avid collector, always having a fun memory, photo, or trinket to share. He was a faithful blood donor, with 263 lifetime donations. He served on several mission trips with different churches in the area, doing building projects in Togo, Guatemala, Nicaragua, South Africa, Kosovo, Brazil, and Zambia. Jim was known for his heart for service, and even in his final days, was assisting with projects for family and friends at church and helping people with any needs that he could.

Family will receive visitors at Washington Heights Baptist Church, 5650 Far Hills Avenue, Dayton, OH 45429 on Tuesday, July 8th from 5-8pm. A service honoring his life will be held at the same location at 10am on Wednesday, July 9th, with Paul Delange officiating. Private burial immediately to follow. Rather than sending flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the Versiti Blood Center of Ohio or to the church in James' honor.
