CANTON, OHIO – Charlene “Char” Ann Johanning, age 79, of Canton, OH, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Aultman Women’s Board Compassionate Care Center surrounded by loved ones. Charlene was born on March 29, 1945, in Detroit, Michigan to the late Omero and Eileene (Roberts) Derubeis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandfather Dewey Roberts and grandmother Lydia Roberts (Rothe). On August 13, 1966, Charlene married Richard Johanning in Canton, Ohio, where they lived and remained happily married for fifty-eight years.

Charlene is survived by her husband, Richard Johanning; her daughter, Andrea Johanning; her son Kelly Johanning; her grandchildren, Amy Charlene Garman, Kelly Johanning, Jr. and Christopher Plumlee and great-grandson William Danger Johanning.

Charlene attained her degree in nursing and diligently served those in need at Aultman Hospital for forty-three years. She was a proud Navy mom. Anyone who knew her knew that all her children were sailors in the U.S. Navy. She was always the biggest advocate and most ardent supporter of her children, even before supporting them in their service in the armed forces. Charlene also supported each of them in their sports activities, football and cheerleading. She loved to spend long, peaceful hours in her home reading and sewing. A member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and president of WELCA for some years, Charlene was devoted to service and worship within her beloved church community.

Visitation will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4120 Cleveland Avenue NW, Canton, Ohio 44709 on Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 12 p.m. at the church, with Reverend Bob Sander officiating. Entombment will follow at Northlawn Cemetery.
